At the same time, we never forget that we are simply guests to a country. By travelling courteously and respectfully, in small groups (12 is the maximum size) to minimise our impact, ensures that every Babel Travel adventure is a beneficial experience for everyone involved.

Babel Travel evolved over many years through travellers who felt they had not fully experienced a country they were visiting due to the very limited opportunities to get to interact with local people, travel on local transport and visit off-the-beaten track destinations.

We believe that travel should be stimulating, and that it should give you an authentic taste of a country. We want our travellers to relish the amazing diversity of countries and cultures the world has to offer; we don’t want you just to visit a country, we want you to fully experience it as well.

One of Babel Travel's strengths has been our obsession with quality service. We've always believed that our commitment to you doesn't end the moment that you have paid for your adventure. Quite the opposite; it is just the start. While many operators simply get a local company to handle the day to day operations of their trips, we do it all ourselves. We have managers based throughout our Babel Travel destinations and all of our groups are managed by our own tour leaders. Our local teams include guides, drivers, administration staff and contacts in the local community who help us ensure that our adventures are active and involving.

We constantly strive to improve the quality and effectiveness of our products and services. We lead from the front, innovate and welcome change. Between us, we’ve chalked up over 20 years of travel that spans over 150 different countries. That’s not all. In their former lives, our Babel Travel team have been professional tour leaders, specialist guides and travel managers, so nobody is better placed to market trips that appeal to a wide range of specialist interests.

Travelling in a small group of people gives you a sense that you are experiencing a country with a group of friends, rather than a typical tour. This is why we keep our group sizes small. On all Babel Travel trips you will be travelling with a maximum of 12 people; all like-minded people from different parts of the world. This means that at any given chance, your group is able to fully experience a place and their people, blend in with the culture and crowds or visit small communities with little trouble.

The great thing is, by travelling side by side a local person on a bus, wandering through a remote village or visiting a person's house, you are much more likely to be asked to join in, as locals will sense that you are genuinely interested in their way of life and don't just want buy souvenirs. The best souvenir that you will ever take away from a Babel trip will be a smile and the acknowledgement from locals that you care.

We believe that Sustainable Tourism is all about trying to ensure that travel to destinations is a positive and enriching experience for all - people, places and the environment. It ranges from basic things like dressing appropriately in parts of the world where showing a shoulder is disrespectful, to the more complicated issue of making sure that your money stays in the local community. We all know that the economic gain from tourism is vital for those economies, but this should never be at the expense of a country's culture or their environment. Contributing directly to local economies and helping develop cross-cultural understanding; breaking down barriers is what Babel Travel is all about.

Right from the very start, Babel Travel has been built upon partnerships between us and our local suppliers in the countries where we operate. Our partners on the ground, are all from the local communities and are almost always small (but very experienced) operators. Babel Travellers want to make a difference to the world, not just visit it. On every trip you will visit a Babel Travel charity and by donating at these charities, you will be doing just that - helping to improve lives in local communities all over the world

Our adventures give that something special beyond what you would find on a typical, mass-produced tour. Of course, we make sure that you get to see all the major sites of a country and set aside plenty of time for opportunities to get to know local people through home visits, travelling on local transport, visiting off-the-beaten track places, visiting schools, development centres and charities. There is also plenty of free time for your own exploration and, of course for relaxing.

It is important that you understand our style of travel. Our style of travel is one of authentic experiences and real life adventures. That means we burst the tourist bubble and show you the real world. We travel in a way that fully appreciates cultures and lifestyles very different from our own. Our aim is to provide the best holiday experience possible, but we do not shield you from the cultural differences, inefficiencies and frustrations that are a part of the places we visit. In fact, we want you to embrace the difference. Get your hands dirty, rough it a little! We believe in you getting out there and experiencing the real world, good and bad.

Where you stay is all part of your Babel Travel experience and believe that it should reflect the country the country you are visiting. Whether it's a big city hotel, beach hut or a homestay in a village, staying close to a region's people and culture is important when deciding upon our hotels. We use mostly locally owned establishments and choose them for their friendliness as well as their facilities, convenience and of course character. Rooms are usually based on twin-share but not to worry, our trips don't charge a single supplement. Single travellers will be paired with a room mate of the same sex. We try to mix it up to give you the best cross- section of culture. Our philosophy is if it moves, we’ll be on it! Whether it be riding a camel or donkey, using a local taxi, travelling on a local ferry our clients are ready for an experience beyond the normal of merely looking out of a bus window, taking photos at all that is happening around them. We want you to sense it, feel it and, err...smell it!. Half the fun of travel is the travelling itself.

We believe that getting from A to B should be a highlight of your trip, not a task. That's why Babel Travel adventures come with all manner of weird and wonderful local transport options, from the familiar to the strange, at times. The actual 'vehicles' will depend on when and where you go, as well as the trip style. Whatever the transportation, you can be sure it will be more than just a way to get from once place to another.

Sampling the local cuisine is a big part of your travelling experience. No matter where you travel with us, great food travels with you. We realise that everyone is different, and when it comes to food there are varying degrees of adventure. Most of our trips include some meals, but we also leave plenty of room for you to explore the local cuisine on your own. However, when in remote regions such as on a boat trips, or in small villages, we include most meals. The food we include is hearty and fresh and most people are amazed at what our cooks can achieve on board a boat or at desert camp. Meal inclusions are indicated on the relevant trip summary pages.

One of the advantages of travelling with Babel Travel is that it is really very much like travelling on your own, but thankfully for you, with none of the problems. Our trips are designed so that you have enough time to yourself on most days to pursue your own interests and take part in some of the great optional activities on offer.

Behind every great Babel Travel trip are our excellent group leaders. The main aim of the group leader is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have that dream holiday! They will provide information on the places you are travelling, make suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eateries and introduce you to our local friends. For specific areas such as cultural sites, you will also have a local guide who will impart their excellent local knowledge. All group leaders, whether they be local or western are fluent in the English as well as the local language, giving you that unique, local experience.
